Hiawassee is an Appalachian Trail community. The Southern Highroads Trail passes through Hiawassee and alongside Lake Chatuge, a TVA reservoir popular for swimming, boating, jet skiing, paddling, sport fishing, and other water sports. There are several entrances to the Appalachian Trail at various locations in the area.

The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds hosts the annual Georgia Mountain Fair in July and Fall Festival each October. The Anderson Music Hall at the fairgrounds hosts great shows with top name stars each year. Hamilton Gardens at Lake Chatuge, bursts into bloom early April to late May and can almost take your breath away at the sight of more than 3,000 azaleas and rhododendrons.

Hiawassee River is known as "the hidden jewel of trout fishing." Waterfalls dot the landscape and provide great hiking jaunts.

Lake Chatuge is a TVA lake with 132 miles of shoreline, perfect for boating, fishing, skiing, swimming, picnicking in secluded coves and camping. There are many public boat ramps that offer easy access to all water sports. A swimming beach, playgrounds and numerous picnic tables are also provided at the Towns County Recreational Beach. Many of the campgrounds are located on the scenic lake shore, and other campgrounds offer more private settings. In a year with normal rainfall, the water level in Chatuge Reservoir varies about 10 feet from summer to winter to provide seasonal flood storage. Full pool is at 1,925 feet above M.S.L (median above sea level)

Lake Chatuge is located in two states Georgia (Hiawassee) and North Carolina (Hayesville). Construction on Lake Chatuge started on July 17, 1941. The gates were closed on February 12, 1942. Lake Chatuge flood control storage at normal maximum pool the reservoir holds 7,050 acre feet of water. Lake Chatuge has 1 enclosed water-cooled generators with a second generator added later. Chatuge Lake Dam is 144 feet high, 2,850 feet long, and 980 feet wide at the base. The reservoir fills 7.050 acres, and is 13 miles long. The Lake Chatuge reservoir is operated for many uses, including flood control, power generation, water quality, and aquatic ecology. electricity, and helps maintain navigation depth on the ferment dams, generating electricity at each one.

Young Harris is the home of Young Harris College and former Georgia Governor and U.S Senator Zell Miller.

Young Harris College is a private, 4 year, liberal arts institution with their campus nestled in the heart of town. Originally named in honor of Judge Young Loftin Gerdine Harris of Athens, GA, the college has grown over the years.

Located on the Young Harris College campus is Rollins Planetarium, which offers Friday night star shows.  The observatory for the planetarium sits on a hill overlooking Brasstown Valley Resort.

Brasstown Valley Resort is an upscale mountain resort which boasts an equestrian center, restaurant & pub, full service spa, hiking trails, golfing and conference facilities. A short drive to Crane Creek Vineyards  to enjoy a delightful wine tasting experience along with breathtaking views of the adjacent mountains and valleys.
